Penelope Douglas is a writer and teacher in Las Vegas. Born in Dubuque, Iowa, she is the oldest of five children. Penelope attended the University of Northern Iowa, earning a Bachelor's degree in Public Administration, because her father told her to "just get the damn degree!" She then earned a Masters of Science in Education at Loyola University in New Orleans, because she HATED public administration. The horsemen are not bound by many rules, at least not when it comes to Devil's Night, and it seems Penelope Douglas is operating under the same philosophy when it comes to this series. A romance that is anything but gradual, sweet, and tender, a villain that you alternately hate and feel overwhelming empathy for, and characters that are not always instantly likeable, kind, or possibly even sane, and yet it all works. You may often find yourself wondering why, as I frequently did; asking yourself how you feel so invested and even connected with these men that don't seem to care about much, play by any rules, and can be downright cruel at times, and marveling at the way that certain characters can seem so evil at times yet so vulnerable, characters that you love to hate, but may just also hate to love. In any case, it doesn't seem as though rules are needed around here, not when Hideaway is so fascinating, so addicting, and so compelling. Not when the least likely of men can bring a tear to your eye, and the most scandalous of characters can easily capture your heart.
Being inside Kai's mind is even more intriguing than I first imagined. Perverse? Deranged? Psychotic? Or just a thrill seeker who thrives on the high of endorphins? After reading Hideaway, I'm sure we can all agree what type of man he is, but there are little glimpses into all of these things from time to time as Kai struggles with his past mistakes, the buzz that comes from depravity, and living up to the expectations of his friends and family.
I love a man who knows what he wants and will stop at nothing to get it and Kai is just that man. Having no idea the extent of what he was dealing with yet willing to take on the toughest, scariest, most connected man in Thunder Bay and his merciless son, Kai is determined to play any game he has to in order to get what he wants, prove the kind of man that he is, and live freely with the ones that he loves.
Not your typical romance, but a romance nonetheless. Romances are made up of drama, conflict, compromise, and discovery and this one certainly cornered the market on all these things as well as an enormous amount of tension, and more than enough doubt and animosity. An unnerving, relentless power struggle, creating tension so thick you could cut it with a knife and making you want to scream at these two characters to just give in already. You will both love and hate every minute of this delicious back and forth.
Hideaway will thrill you, consume you, amuse you, entice you, and move you. Throw out your rule book when it comes to Hideaway and the Devil's Night series, scrap any preconceived notions or reservations, open your mind to the many shapes, forms, and expressions of love, and simply sit back and enjoy the ride.
