Review by Michelle:
A.L. Jackson is one of those authors that I add to my TBR at the mere announcement of a new book, long before reading a blurb, and usually months before a release date. Once the synopsis for
A Stone in the Sea was revealed and I found out that Sebastian Stone is a bit of a bad boy rocker, well it was like she was writing this one just for me.
Always a masterful storyteller and a true weaver of words, A.L Jackson is a wordsmith that creates some of the most beautiful and poetic narratives. Her descriptions are amazingly powerful and expressive without being inundated by details, her stories impeccably paced and so engrossing you are instantly hooked, and her characters are always so perfectly flawed they are real, alluring, and immensely captivating.
A Stone in the Sea is definitely this author's hottest book yet. I always look to an A.L. Jackson book for intense emotion and a beautiful love story. This one also delivers on these fronts, but the steam this time around is just as potent. The chemistry between Shea and Baz is out of control. Usually the sexual tension grows as a couple gets acquainted with each other and they become more bold with their words and actions leading to a passionate buildup and some sexual frustration. In this case the attraction is so electric it crackles from across the room with just one look, one word, or even one gesture and despite the two continuing to be virtual strangers for a large part of the story with merely a few brief encounters, the longing increases exponentially and continues to simmer and swell until it can no longer be contained. Once this desire moves into the bedroom, the steam is almost too hot to handle. The explosive attraction and undeniable longing culminates in savage lust, heady connection, and blazing intensity. Have a fan handy and beware of the potential for some serious overheating.
A.L. Jackson knows just how to draw you in and keep you clamoring for more with an air of mystery so thick it is like a dense fog that only slightly gradually lifts with each tidbit shared along the way. Baz's past increasingly coalesces, slowly piecing together the puzzle of this enigmatic, misunderstood man. Shea obviously has her own secrets but it is easy to get wrapped up in Baz's magnitude of issues making for quite the slap in the face when these secrets finally come to light.
Not only is the story absorbing and engaging, but a completely unforeseen and shocking twist will completely rock you and leave you antsy for more. Just when complications and reservations are overcome and things are looking up, just when you think there is nothing left in Baz's life that can keep these two apart, Shea's past comes back to haunt them both, a past with consequences that can very easily and unexpectedly ruin them. This twist leaves you on the edge and tied up in knots. Luckily the next book is planned for release in just a few short months, just be prepared to be on the hook, anxiously awaiting, and maybe even doing a little author stalking until June.
A Stone in the Sea is powerful, emotional, angsty, sweet, and incredibly passionate. The next book, Drowning to Breathe is, of course, already on my to be read list, but after the end of this one, it has been pushed to the top.
