The Fragile Ordinary by Samantha Young: Blog Tour Review, Excerpt & Giveaway

Blurb:

I am Comet Caldwell.

And I sort of, kind of, absolutely hate my name.

People expect extraordinary things from a girl named Comet. That she’ll be effortlessly cool and light up a room the way a comet blazes across the sky.

But from the shyness that makes her book-character friends more appealing than real people to the parents whose indifference hurts more than an open wound, Comet has never wanted to be the center of attention. She can’t wait to graduate from her high school in Edinburgh, Scotland, where the only place she ever feels truly herself is on her anonymous poetry blog. But surely that will change once she leaves to attend university somewhere far, far away.

When new student Tobias King blazes in from America and shakes up the school, Comet thinks she’s got the bad boy figured out. Until they’re thrown together for a class assignment and begin to form an unlikely connection. Everything shifts in Comet’s ordinary world. Tobias has a dark past and runs with a tough crowd—and none of them are happy about his interest in Comet. Targeted by bullies and thrown into the spotlight, Comet and Tobias can go their separate ways…or take a risk on something extraordinary.

Yvette's Review:

I’ve read nearly two dozen books by Samantha Young across various genres and her gift for crafting heartwarming, emotional, and thought-provoking stories never ceases to amaze me. It’s this confidence in her brilliant storytelling abilities that drew me to her new Young Adult romance, The Fragile Ordinary, even though YA isn’t a genre I typically gravitate towards. Going in to this book, as with any Samantha Young book, I expected an engaging storyline and endearing characters, though I didn’t expect to identify so closely with the heroine or to feel as though I had been transported back to high school. With The Fragile Ordinary, Samantha Young delivers a sweet, angst-filled, romantic story about the intricacies of love, friendship, and family, with a heroine every introverted bookworm can relate to.

With a name like Comet Caldwell, a renowned artist for a mother, and a successful author for a father, our heroine feels pressured to live an extraordinary life. As a sixteen-year-old aspiring poet with antisocial tendencies and a preference for avoiding reality by getting lost within the pages of books, Comet is a seemingly average teenager with seemingly average problems. She has two best friends who don’t quite understand her, parents who leave her to her own devices, and an inconvenient crush on the cute, but troubled, new guy. That’s the beauty of The Fragile Ordinary, though. The narrative is deceptively simplistic, following the story of a girl on the cusp of adulthood as she navigates falling in love and discovering who she is and what she wants from life. The story might follow that of a young adult, but it tackles mature issues and complex emotions that are poignant, thought-provoking, and impactful.

At its heart, The Fragile Ordinary is a coming-of-age story about staying true to yourself and finding your voice, no matter what’s at stake. It’s about learning to not only accept but appreciate your individuality, flaws, quirks, and all. It’s captivating. It’s romantic. It’s introspective. It’s gut-wrenching. It’s compelling. It’s also a tearjerker. As a reader accustomed to Happy Ever Afters, I would’ve loved to know exactly what the future entailed for Comet but, as it is, The Fragile Ordinary left me perfectly satisfied, if a tad bit worse for wear. If you’re in the mood for a sweet, wistful, angst-filled YA romance, The Fragile Ordinary is the perfect read to submerse yourself in.

Excerpt:

As much as I was desperate to see Tobias and afraid to at the same time, I’d like to think I’m not that self-absorbed. I did offer to spend the rest of the day with Vicki, not wanting to leave her alone when she was feeling so down about her parents’ separation, but she insisted she had a ton of work to do for the show.

I knew the show meant a lot to her and Steph but I was kind of glad it would be over soon. It had stolen all their time, and yes, as petty as it may seem, I was jealous it had brought the two of them closer together.

Nerves returned with a vengeance as I made my way to the esplanade. Not only was I jittery over my confusing conversation with Vicki about what it was Tobias wanted from me, but I was tense over meeting up with Stevie. We were basically about to hand him an ultimatum, and ultimatums usually didn’t turn out well.

As soon as I saw Tobias standing outside the Espy my heart started to pound, my pulse thrumming hard in my neck. He turned and caught sight of me and began to stride up the street toward me. His pace quickened and he seemed so determined my knees quavered a little.

When he reached me I opened my mouth to say hello, but the greeting died on my lips as he cupped my face in his warm hands and bowed his head to kiss me.

Shock, thrill, fear, want, all mixed inside of me as I closed my eyes and clung to his arms. His lips were soft, coaxing, brushing against mine, teasing me. Heat flashed through my body from the tips of my toes to my cheeks, and I leaned in, looking for something beyond even this. This felt nothing like Ethan’s kiss.

It was lovely…and yet…I wanted more.

Tobias drew his lips from mine ever so slightly and murmured against them, “Open your mouth.”

I flushed even hotter at the command but did so without hesitation. When his mouth returned to my mouth he touched his tongue to mine, just a flick, a torment that made me whimper in confusion. Everything within me seemed to tighten, coiling into an increasing tension as his tongue danced more forcefully with mine. It was a dance I easily followed, kissing him back with more fervor, my fingers digging into his arms.

This was the more I’d been waiting for.

This was everything.

He broke the kiss, gasping my name against my lips.

I blinked, discombobulated. My whole body hummed with an urgency I’d never felt before.

Tobias leaned his forehead against mine as we sought to catch our breaths and equilibrium. “I should have done that last night,” he finally whispered.

Relieved laughter bubbled out of me in giggles that made him smile with such affection that I wondered how I could have possibly doubted his feelings for me. Tobias King liked me. Me. Comet Caldwell. If someone as special as Tobias could like me so well, maybe I was a little bit special, too?

Moonlight Seduction (de Vincent #2) by Jennifer L. Armentrout: Blog Tour Review & Excerpt

Blurb:

The de Vincent brothers are back—and so is the intrigue that surrounds them—in New York Times bestselling author Jennifer L. Armentrout’s sizzling new novel . . .

Nicolette Bresson never thought she’d return to the de Vincents’ bayou compound. It’s where her parents work, where Nikki grew up . . . and where she got her heart broken by Gabriel de Vincent himself. Yet here she is, filling in for her sick mother. Avoiding Gabe should be easy, especially when so much of Nikki’s time is spent trying not to be stabbed in the back by the malicious hangers-on who frequent the mansion. But escaping memories of Gabe, much less his smoking-hot presence, is harder than expected—especially since he seems determined to be in Nikki’s space as much as possible.

Gabriel spent years beating himself up over his last encounter with Nikki. He’d wanted her then, but for reasons that were bad for both of them. Things have now changed. Gabe sees more than a girl he’s known forever; he sees a smart, talented, and heartbreakingly beautiful woman . . . one who’s being stalked from the shadows. Now, Gabe will do anything to keep Nikki safe—and to stop the de Vincent curse from striking again.

Excerpt:

He moved forward, maybe a foot or two, but stopped like one would if they were approaching a rabid dog. A heartbeat passed. “Your hair . . .” He tilted his head to the side. “It’s different.”

“Yeah, it is.” Her hair used to be a rather dull medium brown, but then she found this amazing hair stylist in Tuscaloosa and turned her brown hair into this array of blondes and browns, using some weird technique called balayage. “It’s basically just highlights and stuff.” “Stuff.”

His gaze flickered over the bun. Uncomfortable, she scanned the kitchen. “And my hair is longer. A lot longer.”

His brows lifted.

Was she really telling him the length of her hair? This was the most strained conversation she’d ever had in her life. And that was, well, it was sad. She peeked at him. It used to not be this way. Back before . . . well, before she ruined everything, he’d be teasing her and asking about her college. He’d be talking to her like he could actually stand being in the same room with her.

She needed this conversation to be over like it was yesterday and she also needed to figure out how she could work here and not run into Gabe. The house was big enough that it should be possible. “I need to get back to—”

“Planting your face against the over door?”

Her shoulders slumped. “Actually, I need to finish the potatoes. So, if you’ll excuse me.” She started to turn away, praying that he’d just leave.

“That’s it? That’s all you have to say to me? Because I have a lot I need to say to you,” he said. “Never in a million years did I think I’d see you here again.”

Nikki’s spine stiffened like steel had been poured into it. Oh God. Her throat spasmed.

“We need to talk.”

“No we don’t,” she said quickly. “We do not need to talk about anything.”

“Bullshit,” he snapped, and his voice was so much closer that she turned to him on instinct.

Gabe was now at the edge of the massive island, only two or three feet from her. She stepped back into the counter. Her heart thundered in her chest as her gaze flicked to the kitchen door.

“No one is coming near here,” he said as if reading her mind. Her gaze flew back to his. “Dev is in his office on the second floor, in a meeting and your father is out with the landscaper. No one is going to hear us.”

A weird mixture of sensations assaulted her. One was a chill that skated down her spine. The other was a tight, hot shiver that danced over her skin.

Gabe kept coming at her, not stopping until he was right in front of her, separated by a few inches. She sucked in air, catching the crisp, clean scent of his cologne. It reminded her of storms, of that night.

That was the last thing she wanted to be reminded of.

Like his brother, he was a good head and then some taller than her, so right now, her eyes were fastened to his chest.

Thank God he was wearing a shirt.

“I . . . I don’t want to talk,” she managed to say.

“I do.”

“Gabe—”

“You owe me this.”

Her body jerked as she pressed her lips together. He was right. She owed him a conversation. “Okay.”

There was another beat of silence and then he asked in a voice so low she almost didn’t believe she heard him right.

“Did I hurt you that night?”

Yvette's Review:

After the jaw-dropping revelations that were discovered at the end of Moonlight Sins, I was eager to dive even deeper into the mysterious, scandalous world of the de Vincent family. Getting a new love story on top of what already promised to be an intriguing, drama-filled continuation of the de Vincent Series certainly piqued my curiosity as well. If you thought Moonlight Sins was intense, brace yourself because Moonlight Seduction is packed with more mystery, more danger, and more intrigue. Moonlight Seduction will wreak havoc on your emotions, set your pulse racing, and blow your ever-loving mind.

With Moonlight Seduction, Jennifer L. Armentrout delivers another bone-chilling, shiver-inducing, Hitchcockian thriller with protagonists, Gabriel de Vincent and Nicolette Bresson, at the center. After returning home to assume her ailing mother’s role as the caretaker of the de Vincent household, Nikki comes face to face with Gabe, the middle de Vincent brother with whom she has a messy, complicated history. Her longtime crush on a man ten years her senior resulted in years of heartache and disappointment, which leads to an uneasy, tension-filled reunion. The hostility between them doesn’t erase their budding attraction, though, and it’s not long before they succumb to their innermost desires. Intruding on their would-be romance are a number of suspicious circumstances and nonstop, eyebrow-raising drama. The de Vincent curse seems to be striking again, this time putting Nikki in harm’s way.

I didn’t think it was possible for Jennifer L. Armentrout to top Moonlight Sins in terms of shock value, but Moonlight Seduction was pure insanity. In the best possible way. The author is brilliant at building suspense (So. Much. Suspense.), inducing paranoia (I was thoroughly freaked out), and keeping you guessing (Seriously, what was happening?!). Between the emotional roller coaster of a romance and the danger that stalked these characters throughout the narrative, I don’t think my heart stopped racing until the final page.

Moonlight Seduction is the very definition of a page-turner. I raced through the pages, determined to uncover each new, astonishing secret and finally learn the source of the newest troubles plaguing the de Vincent family. There’s so much drama – both familial and romantic – and so much happening in every chapter that I found it impossible to take a break for even a second. This is the type of book that makes you want to slap a “Do Not Disturb” sign on your forehead because it’s too eventful, too engrossing, and just too good to put down. This book is, without a doubt, a must-read.
