Betrayed (Forbidden #3) by Melody Anne: Blog Tour Excerpt

Blurb:

Byron Knight’s world isn’t what most would consider perfect, but he is satisfied with the way his life is going. There are only two people in this world whom he loves — his brothers, Blake and Tyler Knight.

A woman is now threatening the carefully balanced beam the brothers have been holding on to, and her name is McKenzie Beaumont. Before she had entered the life of his brother Blake, no one, male or female, had ever come between the three men, but McKenzie and her twisted business has interfered for the last time in the Knight brothers’ lives, and she is about to feel Byron’s wrath.

McKenzie Beaumont hasn’t always been so closed off, so cold, or what the world sees as cold, but she’s learned the hard way that men are never to be trusted. If she stays ahead of the game, protects the women she employs, then the women — herself included — are the true winners, even if the men think they have all the control.

Excerpt:

Her heart was in her throat. She had no doubt that she should walk away, but the pay was great, and the reality was that she had nothing to hide, so there was no way for this man to hurt her in any way. So, he would be the one losing this battle here, not her. If she backed down now, he would think she was up to something. Why was it that a person looking at you as if you were guilty, made you shift on your feet? Even when you hadn’t committed the crime? She probably would never have the answer to that.

Looking him in the eye, her back straight, she made her decision.

“Then we have an understanding.” Her voice was firm.

“I guess we do. Let’s seal the deal.”

McKenzie knew exactly how he planned on sealing the deal, and there was no way she was letting that happen. Sidestepping, she managed to come away from his grasp and moved an appropriate distance away, then stuck out her hand.

Byron smiled, a movement of the lips that certainly didn’t reach his eyes, and finally he reached out and took her fingers. But instead of shaking like a normal person did, he held tightly to them and then her hand was being raised to his lips where he placed a kiss on her palm.

“I look forward to Monday,” he said, still holding her hand close to his mouth.

“You can release me now,” she said, her face blank as she refused to break eye contact.

“Are you sure you want me to?”

“You’re an arrogant bastard aren’t you?” she asked sweetly, her lips turning in a mocking smile.

His eyes widened just the slightest at her remark, and then a true smile flitted to his lips, shocking her more than anything else he’d done. “That, I am, Ms. Beaumont, that I am,” he said.

Finally he released her, and she quickly fled the restaurant before he could say or do anything else. When she finally felt she was far enough away to breathe, she stopped and leaned against a wall.

What in the world had she just gotten herself into?

Excerpt:

I looked back on my time with Mathias Sloan as an experience—one that couldn’t be dodged or ignored. He swept into my life like a hurricane, destroying everything in his wake.

Because of him I learned that there’s a learning curve to love. Because of him I realized that there’s always that one person that destroys and sends you back into the world to fend for yourself. And it doesn’t matter how hard they hurt you. Whether you like it or not, the scars on your heart spell out their name.

You will always remember them.

I knew I had to get this over with. Swallowing loudly, I opened the door. He turned around. And there he was. All six feet three inches of him.

Mathias Sloan.

His hands were tucked into his jeans. His dirty blonde hair was cut short. A five o’clock shadow appeared on his face. I remembered what that stubble felt like against my neck.

Tension was etched in his hazel eyes. He looked haggard, like he hadn’t slept in days.

But it didn’t matter what he looked like; my heart beat against my chest, begging to burst, and reach for him.

“Hi,” he said deeply.

I gripped the doorknob so hard, my knuckles turned white. I tried to force words out of my mouth, but nothing would come out. I just stood there, staring at him with wide eyes.

“Can we talk?” He nudged his head toward the cobblestone street behind him, and when he turned, the sunlight reflected on my ring.

I quickly put my hand behind my back, but it was too late.

His voice faded into nothing and his eyes clouded over. For a second, I saw fear. A flash of anger. And then, something that I never thought I’d see from Mathias: hurt.

Thousands of questions appeared in his eyes. The last thing I wanted to do was answer him; the longer I stood there the further I drifted from my fury.

"I’m marrying him,” I blurted out. My voice was shaking. I knew if I stayed here, so close to him, I would crumble and I would be back at the beginning.

Mathias took a step back, as if I’d punched him. He stared at me with hurt and accusation. “What did you do, Katja?”

Kyland (A Sign of Love) by Mia Sheridan: ARC Review

Blurb:

Dirt poor. Hillbilly. Backwoods hick. Mountain folk.

Tenleigh Falyn struggles each day to survive in a small, poverty-stricken, coal mining town where she lives with her sister and mentally ill mother. Her dream of winning the college scholarship given to one student by the local coal company and escaping the harshness of her life, keeps her going.

Kyland Barrett lives in the hills, too, and has worked tirelessly—through near starvation, through deep loneliness, against all odds—to win the Tyton Coal Scholarship and leave the town that is full of so much pain.

They're both determined not to form any attachments, but one moment changes everything. What happens when only one person gets to win? When only one person gets to leave? And what happens to the one left behind?

Kyland is a story of desperation and hope, loss and sacrifice, pain and forgiveness, but ultimately, a story of deep and unending love.

THIS IS A STAND-ALONE SIGN OF LOVE NOVEL, INSPIRED BY TAURUS. New Adult Contemporary Romance: Due to strong language and sexual content, this book is not intended for readers under the age of 18.

Review by Yvette:

In a genre populated with familiar categories such as billionaire, rock star, and bad boy romances, etc., it’s not often that I come across a book that is unlike any other. After finishing the latest installment in the Sign of Love series by Mia Sheridan and trying to organize my thoughts, I have come to the conclusion that Kyland is one such book. Inspired by the myth of Taurus with the backdrop of the Appalachian Mountains, Kyland is a story about two protagonists finding hope in a bleak situation and struggling to survive against formidable odds. Kyland isn't a book you pick up to waste away a few mindless hours; it's a book that will make you THINK each thought, makes you FEEL each emotion along with the characters, as if you were experiencing them firsthand. With Kyland, Mia Sheridan has proved yet again that her writing has a direct line to both my tear ducts and the muscles responsible for making my insides twist into knots.

Kyland is very much a character-driven narrative, following the everyday lives of protagonists, Kyland Barrett and Tenleigh Falyn – lives that are defined by poverty and hardship and the never-ending struggle to survive. I couldn't help but admire that both Kyland and Tenleigh make the most of the hand fate has dealt them because, as unenviable as their circumstances may be, they both clutched tight to the hope for a better future. The depth of the connection that Kyland and Tenleigh form over their shared desire to leave the godforsaken town they call home becomes this all-consuming force, drawing me further and further inside of the intimate bubble they form around themselves. I was consummately swept up in couple’s breathtakingly beautiful romance, the intensity of which revealed a maturity beyond their years. I have never been more grateful for dual perspectives because, getting both Kyland and Tenleigh’s viewpoints allowed me to become fully immersed in the minds of both characters, which was truly an unforgettable experience.

There's a line Tenleigh says that perfectly sums up my feelings about Kyland: "...I didn't know my heart could be filled with awe and grief, joy and sorrow, all at the exact same time." The narrative evoked a number of emotions in a short period of time, with different ones competing for prominence at any given moment. It felt as though my mind was being torn in a dozen directions and the powerful effect of the words on the pages was almost too much to bare at times. From one chapter to the next, Mia Sheridan has an incredible ability to make you feel as though your heart is breaking into a million tiny pieces, before setting out to not only repair it, but fill it to bursting with happiness. Kyland led me through a roller coaster of emotions, but I wouldn't hesitate to journey through the heartache and turmoil once again as long as it led to the feelings of peace and contentment that comes with reading the book's final pages.
