Nothing Personal by Karina Halle: ARC Review

Blurb:

It's just business, nothing personal...until you have to work with your ex

NOTHING PERSONAL is a brand-new, full-length STANDALONE ROMANTIC COMEDY with a single dad, enemies-to-lovers, second-chance office romance twist, from the NYT & USA Today Bestselling Author of A Nordic King and Bad at Love.

Nova Lane is having the worst week possible. Her latest relationship ended while on her much-needed vacation, then upon her first day back at work, she learns that her beloved boss has quit – and despite having worked so hard for it, she’s not being considered for his position.

Who is being considered for the position is none other than Kessler Rocha. Her ex-coworker and ex-lover, Kessler’s the man who broke her heart five years earlier and the reason she moved thousands of miles away, switched jobs, and created numerous voodoo dolls in Kessler’s (very burly, very handsome) liking.

Yup. Worst week ever.

New in town and on her turf, Kessler promises he’s not the same man he was – and considering he’s now a single father to a precocious toddler, he’s telling the truth.

But he’s still an arrogant and devilishly charming man who’s taking over the position Nova feels she deserves. The fact that he’s gotten even more sexy over the years doesn’t help either.

Now Nova and Kessler have the choice to let bygones be bygones, or fight with each other every chance they get, with unresolved sexual tension only adding fuel to the flames, creating a fire that might just burn down the whole office.

In the corporate world they say it’s just business, nothing personal.

Nova and Kessler are about to show just how personal things can get.

NOTE: This book may be a light and sweet comedy BUT it also contains raunchy humor, a copious amount of swearing and, of course, some fairly gratuitous sex scenes! READER DISCRETION IS ADVISED.

**I love to read when I have a chance. I love making new friends, too. But PLEASE don't add me if you're an author just wanting me to read your book and promote yourself shamelessly. You should have more of a reason for friending me than THAT. Also, please don't recommend me books, I have enough on my TBR and not enough time to read. And I'm a super picky reader. Cheers!**

The daughter of a Norwegian Viking and a Finnish Moomin, Karina Halle grew up in Vancouver, Canada with trolls and eternal darkness on the brain. This soon turned into a love of all things that go bump in the night and a rather sadistic appreciation for freaking people out. Like many of the flawed characters she writes, Karina never knew where to find herself  and has dabbled in acting, make-up artistry, film production, screenwriting, photography, travel writing and music journalism. She eventually found herself in the pages of the very novels she wrote (if only she had looked there to begin with).

Karina holds a screenwriting degree from Vancouver Film School and a Bachelor of Journalism from TRU. Her travel writing, music reviews/interviews and photography have appeared in publications such as Consequence of Sound, Mxdwn and GoNomad Travel Guides. She currently lives on an island on the coast of British Columbia where she's preparing for the zombie apocalypse.

When I'm not writing, I'm reading. And when I'm not reading I might be writing up a review. I'm wary of books with a lot of hype but unless something has bad reviews across the board, I'll probably still take a chance on it and give my honest opinion. Everyone is different and I won't pass up an adventure just because someone else didn't like it. And that's what I think when I look at my bookshelf...what adventure can I go on today?

Yvette's Review:

When I learned that Karina Halle wrote a single dad/enemies-to-lovers/second chance/office romance, I was intrigued to see how she’d meld together these four tropes into one cohesive storyline. Following the story of two former lovers turned rivals competing for the same job, Nothing Personal is a rom-com that delivers on both the romance and the comedy. With a storyline that’s both uproariously funny and hopelessly romantic, characters that are engaging and relatable, and a romance that’s heart-meltingly sweet and scorching hot, Nothing Personal is my new favorite read from Karina Halle.

After her boss unexpectedly quits and names her ex-boyfriend as his replacement, Nova Lane’s life is turned upside down. Kessler Rocha, her level-ten heartbreaker of an ex has relocated to Hawaii with his young son, looking more handsome than ever. Their chemistry is obvious, their attraction is mutual, if reluctant, and their animosity is a living, breathing entity. The unresolved feelings and sexual tension lingering between Kessler and Nova make for an explosive work environment, rife with snarky banter and covert hookups, all in the midst of a not-exactly-healthy competition for a coveted management position.

With the perfect balance of heat, humor, and heart, Nothing Personal is a book that’ll tug on your heartstrings and make you laugh aloud again and again. The love/hate relationship between Kessler and Nova brings fire and passion to the narrative as well as hilarity. Whether it was Kessler’s vendetta against a mischievous chicken or Nova’s tendency to say exactly what’s on her mind, this book had me in stitches from start to finish. There’s also just enough angst to stir your emotions and ensure you’re glued to your Kindle, needing to find out what happens next.

If you’re in the mood for a lighthearted love story that’ll make you blush one moment and make you laugh the next, Nothing Personal is an unputdownable page-turner. As a rom-com junkie, I can confidently say this is one you won’t want to miss out on.

Picture this - I'm ready to win back the love of my life, and I'm going big this time. We're talking boom box, sing her name in the rain, let the whole damn neighborhood know I'm good and ready this time around. After all, if you're going to grand gesture the ever-loving hell out of a second chance, you need to pull out all the stops.

There's only one little problem.

My college girlfriend isn't the one who shows up when I play my "I'll do anything to win you back" tune.

The woman who flings open the second-floor window tells me my ex doesn't live here anymore. But she'll help me win her back. Anything for romance, anything for a guy so willing to go big for love. And that's what I want at first. Until I get to know my new "romance coach" and discover she's funny, clever, and keeps me on my toes. And boy, do I ever need that.

Now I don't want to win anyone else's heart. I want the woman who's been helping me all along.

Trouble is - she thinks I'm in love with someone else, and when we take off on a road trip, everything I think I know about women is about to be unzipped and turned inside out.

Excerpt:

As I peruse the scenes, the opening notes of a song filter from the front of my townhome. What the hell? Did I leave the streaming app open on my phone? I step away from the counter and head to the front door, looking for my phone, even though I swear I had it with me in the kitchen.

The song grows louder, and it’s not coming from my cell at all. It’s coming from outside. I peer through the peephole.

I jerk back.

Rub my eyes.

What the hell?

Am I really seeing what I’m seeing? I don’t think I had that much wine. I had one sip.

Fine, fine. One large sip. One very large, very hearty sip. All right, it was a gulp.

But I can’t possibly be hallucinating, can I?

I peek again, and holy smokes.

There’s a guy on my front lawn going full Lloyd Dobler.

The hair on the back of my neck stands on end, and my paranoid brain leaps three thousand steps ahead. Did he escape from Alcatraz? Is he going to bang down my door? Attack me?

I pivot and grab the baseball bat I keep handy. As the youngest sister of two older brothers, I’ve learned a few valuable lessons: boys are trouble, pizza is good cold, and always keep a baseball bat near the door and/or bed.

With my bat in hand, I scurry to the kitchen to grab my phone, then fly upstairs to the bedroom, taking the steps two by two.

I race into the bedroom, set the bat at my feet, and keep my phone clutched in my hand, ready to call 911 if need be. I pull back the white curtain a smidge.

And I nearly die laughing.

The song has stopped, and the Dobler wannabe is now kneeling on the ground, furiously hitting buttons on the boom box.

I peer around the curtain’s edge, and it’s like watching a sideshow act auditioning for my circus.

He hoists the boom box up above him again. A new tune plays. I cock my head, listening, and I cringe when I recognize the tune.

For real? Is he truly playing “Unzipped”? I could never stand that song when it was popular eight years ago. The music sounds like a can opener mating with a trombone. I wish he were playing Peter Gabriel’s “In Your Eyes,” like Dobler did in the film.

But as I study the bizarre suburban male mating ritual, I decide to award him points for sheer balls. He also deserves bonus points because he chose to go without the super cheesy trench coat that Dobler wore. It worked for Cusack, but on anyone else that attire screams serial killer.

This guy seems harmless.

And admittedly, from my vantage point two stories above, he’s kind of handsome with the glasses, the thick, floppy hair, and the jeans that fit nicely. Strong jaw too.

Fine, fine. He’s more than kind of handsome. He’s 100 percent good-looking, in that hot nerd kind of way.

Yvette's (Audiobook) Review:

After reading the blurb for Unzipped, I was instantly intrigued. It’s not the first time Lauren Blakely has written about a hero trying to win back the girl of his dreams, but it IS the first time that said dream girl isn’t the heroine. What was even more intriguing was that Unzipped was being released as an Audible original, co-narrated by Andi Arndt and Joe Arden. As a frequent reviewer of the author’s books, I don’t often get to experience her books in audiobook format, so getting to listen to Unzipped was immensely enjoyable, especially in the hands of two such evocative narrators.

As a rom-com junkie, I’ve read my fair share of memorable meet cutes but the bungled, Say Anything-inspired first meeting between Finley and Kyler, who shall henceforth be known as Tom (just go with it), is one for the books. After his grand gesture to win back his college girlfriend results in him serenading the wrong woman, Tom is forced to regroup, this time with the help of an inquisitive stranger. Working as a writer for her own TV comedy show, Finley’s brain is wired to see the humor in every situation. She analyzes the world around her, constantly looking for writing material, and inspiration strikes in the form of the sexy bespectacled nerd who’s adorably clueless when it comes to women. Neither expects their harmless flirtation to lead to a mutual attraction that has them dancing toward something deliciously dangerous.

Together, Tom and Finley have this indefinable, magnetic connection that’s evident in their effortless rapport. They interweave movie quotes into dialogue and flirt shamelessly, bonding over their idiosyncrasies and reveling in each other’s quirks. Their similarities are embraced, but so are their differences, which was both charming and compelling. While Tom initially sets out to reunite with a former flame, his plans change upon meeting a woman who challenges him, excites him, and surprises him at every turn. In turn, Tom gives Finley hope that real-life romance can be just as swoon-worthy as the fictional love stories of film and television.

Packed with flirtatious banter and lighthearted humor, Unzipped is a rom-com for rom-com lovers, cleverly written, refreshingly self-aware, and just plain entertaining. As narrators, Andi Arndt and Joe Arden breathe life into Lauren Blakely’s words, delivering a delightfully fun, unbelievably sexy, listening experience with Unzipped.

Excerpt:

~TENNYSON~

The first time I laid eyes on Webb Bryant he was frighteningly pale from blood loss and nearly delirious from a raging fever. He’d been sporting a hole in his shoulder from a bullet wound and was terrified his brother was dead somewhere in the vast Wyoming wilderness. It was my job to protect and patrol, one I focused on diligently, but Webb was admittedly distracting. I thought he was going to pass out at my feet, a city boy in way over his head. He didn’t. He never wavered or stumbled in the unfamiliar terrain and unknown situation…not once. He’d impressed me with his resilience and his determination to find out what had happened to his older brother. He’d also caught my attention with those burning blue eyes and shock of blond hair, which gave the misleading impression that the man had a single angelic quality about him. Every long, lean line of Webb Bryant oozed playful mischief and bled the promise of wicked things done in the dark…or during the bright light of day. He didn’t seem like the shy type. Even injured and out of his mind with frantic worry for his older sibling, he was the most charming, most flirtatious man I’d ever met. He sent every defense mechanism I had into overdrive, and there wasn’t a second that slid by where I didn’t remind myself he was not my type in the slightest. Besides, once the Warners and I had both the Bryant brothers straightened out, I figured I wouldn’t have to dodge Webb’s advances ever again. He would ramble on to his next adventure and be out of sight and mind.

I breathed a sigh of relief when he went away. He was too tempting. It was too enticing to give in to every single promise made by his easy smile and glinting eyes. Webb was several years younger than me, a man who was obviously lost and still trying to figure out who he wanted to be when he finally grew up. I was a woman who knew exactly who she was and who she could never be. I was never the type to chase after the bad boys, the wanderers, the reckless. No, I fell for the steadfast, the sturdy, and the solid. I gave my heart to the kind of men who held the world up and buffered everyone around them from the raging storm.

I handed my heart to the oldest Warner brother, Cyrus, when we were just kids. Coming to terms with the fact the stoic and serious cowboy would never feel about me the way I felt about him had been one of the hardest things I’d ever had to do. We shared similar dreams, knowing our lives were so much bigger than the ranches that had our family’s bloodlines entrenched in the soil. We both wanted more than Wyoming, and for a long time, I honestly believed we were on the road out of our tiny town together. It didn’t happen that way. Sure, we both got out in our own time and in our own way, but we both ended up back where we started. Cy was taking his return home in stride. He was far less resentful about his homecoming than I was. In fact, the wedding Webb was dragged out of two short days ago was Cy’s.

I thought it was going to be hard, damn near impossible, to watch the man I’d openly loved from afar for most of my life promise his forever to someone else. It wasn’t nearly as bad as I envisioned. Mostly because Cy was stupid happy with his fiery city girl. He’d never been that happy with me, before we left or when we both admitted defeat and came back home. He’d never loved anyone like he loved his Leo, so the sting of watching him put a ring on someone else’s finger was minimal.

I would gouge my eyes out with a rusty spoon before admitting to anyone, especially myself, that since the start of the wedding most of my attention had been on Webb instead of the happy couple. To my surprise, my heart didn’t feel nearly as trampled as I thought it would. It was too busy stupidly racing over the man I believed I wouldn’t see again and knew I should keep my distance from.

The blond man with a penchant for trouble hadn’t stayed gone like I predicted. Nope. He’d shown up right when Cy needed help on the ranch and offered to stick around. Webb claimed he wanted to learn a new skill, seemed he’d taken a shine to the rough way of life in the Wyoming backcountry and wanted to play cowboy for a while. Cy couldn’t say no, and as badly as I wanted to, I couldn’t stay away. I was caught in an endless game of cat and mouse, and some days I wasn’t sure if I was the predator or the prey. I tracked Webb out of the corner of my eye for months. I expected him to up his game and try to lure me to bed, knowing the wedding was going to lower my defenses. Never in a million years would I have predicted he was going to be led away from the festivities in handcuffs.

Yvette's Review:

Have you ever finished a book and thought to yourself, what the heck did I just read? Because I now have the mother of all book hangovers thanks to Colleen Hoover. While thrillers aren’t typically stories I gravitate towards, I was eager to get started on Verity, especially after reading the blurb. If just the description of the book could leave me feeling unsettled and more than a little creeped out, I could only imagine what the book had in store. Only it turns out, I couldn’t have possibly imagined the dark and twisted journey that Verity would take me on. Bone-chilling and shiver-inducing, with pulse-pounding suspense, Verity is a veritable nail-biter of a thriller.

When struggling writer, Lowen Ashleigh, is hired to co-author a successful series by Verity Crawford, she has no idea she’d be swept up in a foreboding tale of mystery and deceit. Assuming creative control over the remaining books in the popular series after an accident leaves Verity incapacitated requires Lowen to stay in her home and comb through notes for research. It also means being in close quarters with Verity’s handsome, grief-stricken husband, Jeremy. It’s when she stumbles across a manuscript containing Verity’s autobiography that Lowen gets an in-in-depth, intimate glimpse into Verity’s life, exposing her deepest, darkest secrets and digging up all the skeletons in her closet.

In what has to be one of the most complex, morally grey narratives I’ve read, Verity is a mind-f***k of epic proportions. It’s a story told in two parts, one set in the present and one in the past, with the feel of an older gothic romance à la Jane Eyre and Rebecca. Verity is both fascinating and disturbing, evoking gut-churning emotions that only grow more intense as the story progresses. Colleen Hoover does a brilliant job in not just building suspense but maintaining it with each chapter, which had my heart racing nonstop and had my anxiety and tension levels soaring. Reading Verity was a bit like watching a horror movie because I was glued to my Kindle, desperate to know what happened next, but I also wanted to cover my eyes and find my happy place.

Wildly different from Colleen Hoover’s previous books, but just as mesmerizing, Verity is a fast-paced thrill ride that kept me guessing from start to finish. Shell-shocked would be the best way to describe my most prevalent emotion upon finishing Verity, along with a bit of awe, mild relief, and more than a little curiosity. Reading this book took me outside my comfort zone, but it was undeniably riveting and left me wanting more. While Verity is not for the faint of heart, it’s without a doubt a must-read.

Excerpt:

“What are you wearing?” Corey is staring down at my shirt, perplexed, just now noticing it despite having spent the last fifteen minutes with me.
I look down at my oversized shirt. For a moment, I forgot how ridiculous I look. “I spilled coffee on my other shirt this morning and had to change.”
“Whose shirt is that?”
I shrug. “Probably yours. It was in my closet.”
“You left your house in that? There wasn’t something else you could have worn?”
“It doesn’t look high fashion?” I’m being sarcastic, but he doesn’t catch it.
He makes a face. “No. Is it supposed to?”
Such an ass. But he’s good in bed, like most assholes.
I’m actually relieved when the conference room door opens and a woman walks in. She’s followed, almost comically, by an older man walking so closely behind her, he bumps into the back of her when she stops.
“Goddammit, Barron,” I hear her mumble.
I almost smile at the idea of Goddammit Barron actually being his name.
Jeremy enters last. He gives me a small nod that goes unnoticed by everyone else.
The woman is dressed more appropriately than I am on my best day, with short black hair and lipstick so red, it’s a little jarring at nine thirty in the morning. She seems to be the one in charge as she reaches for Corey’s hand, and then mine, while Goddammit Barron looks on. “Amanda Thomas,” she says. “I’m an editor with Pantem Press. This is Barron Stephens, our lawyer, and Jeremy Crawford, our client.”
Jeremy and I shake hands, and he does a good job of pretending we didn’t share an extremely bizarre morning. He quietly takes the seat across from me. I try not to look at him, but it’s the only place my eyes seem to want to travel. I have no idea why I’m more curious about him than I am about this meeting.
Amanda pulls folders out of her briefcase and slides them in front of Corey and me.
“Thank you for meeting with us,” she says. “We don’t want to waste your time, so I’ll cut right to the chase. One of our authors is unable to fulfill a contract due to medical reasons, and we’re in search of a writer with experience in the same genre who may be interested in completing the three remaining books in her series.”
I glance at Jeremy, but his stoic expression doesn’t hint at his role in this meeting.
“Who is the author?” Corey asks.
“We’re happy to go over the details and terms with you, but we do ask that you sign the non-disclosure agreement. We would like to keep our author’s current situation out of the media.”
“Of course,” Corey says.
I acquiesce, but I say nothing as we both look over the forms and then sign them. Corey slides them back to Amanda.
“Her name is Verity Crawford,” she says. “I’m sure you’re familiar with her work.”
Corey stiffens as soon as they mention Verity’s name. Of course we’re familiar with her work. Everyone is. I hazard a glance in Jeremy’s direction. Is Verity his wife? They share a last name. He said downstairs that his wife is a writer. But why would he be in a meeting about her? A meeting she isn’t even here for?
“We’re familiar with the name,” Corey says, holding his cards close.
“Verity has a very successful series we would hate to see go unfinished,” Amanda continues. “Our goal is to bring in a writer who is willing to step in, finish the series, complete the book tours, press releases, and whatever else is normally required of Verity. We plan to put out a press release introducing the new co-writer while also preserving as much of Verity’s privacy as possible.”
