As a huge fan of Kylie Scott's Stage Dive series, I went in to Dirty with high expectations. The author veers from Stage Dive's frenetic, highly publicized rock star lifestyle and introduces readers to the tightknit, but drama-laden crew of Dive Bar. The pace is unhurried and the plot is simplistic, devoting ample time to the character development of protagonists, Lydia and Vaughan. With plenty of humor and romance and not a lot of angst, Dirty is an enjoyable, devour-in-one-sitting type of read.
Insta-lust, insta-love, or insta-crazy – whatever you want to call it, the romance between Lydia and Vaughan is inevitable from their first meeting. After fleeing from her wedding day once she finds out her husband-to-be prefers guys over gals, Lydia ends up in a stranger’s house, lamenting the loss of her would-be happily ever after. As for Vaughan, you gotta love a guy who, when confronted with a crying woman wearing a wedding dress in his bathtub, listens to reason rather than immediately calling the cops. Unconventional as their meeting may be, the two instantly click. Their banter is easygoing and flirtatious, but they also tackle hard-hitting topics, delving into the good, the bad, and the ugly, which forges an immediate intimacy between them.
Whether the narrative was developing the relationship between Lydia and Vaughan or familiarizing us with the rest of the Dive Bar group, Dirty is a character-driven story. Lydia is a character I instantly connected with, not just because she's an every-woman, relatable rather than unattainable (which she was), but because from her introduction, she proves herself to be someone who can make the best of a bad situation. Instead of wallowing in her bad fortune, she cracks jokes and pokes fun at herself. Her humor and pluckiness give the story a lighthearted feel, providing the perfect balance to Vaughan’s brooding intensity.
Overall, Dirty is a laugh-out-loud funny, fan-your-face steamy, whirlwind love story that I'm happy to say lives up to its title. After reading Dirty, I’m eager to see where Kylie Scott takes us with upcoming books in the Dive Bar series.
