Troubled pasts, life of the streets, young love, loss, and a heartwarming and much deserved second chance. One Day Soon pulls at your heart strings in every way imaginable. It will bang you over the head with a hard hitting dose of reality all while fostering a healthy love and respect for the fairytale only to turn around and smack you with an unforgiving darkness before once again the simplest, sweetest light shines through.
I'm not going to lie. This book was rough. A rough subject matter. A rough situation. A rough ride of emotion. Rough. Not to say it wasn't without it's glimmer of sunshine, hope, and beauty amidst the ugliness, but with more darkness than light, haunting pasts, and destitution around every turn, One Day Soon is a rough read that will wring your emotions completely dry.
Beautifully written with eloquent and evocative prose in stark contrast to the harsh and merciless reality of the characters' young lives. The pure, selfless, infinite love that prevails amongst the desolation and the noble, self-sacrificing, endearing characters will keep you enthralled and pleading for a much needed happily ever after.
Was this story a bit difficult to read, heartbreakingly real, and acutely raw? Without a doubt. Did that mean I didn't enjoy it? Not even close. There was hope and connection, love and family, appreciation for the little things, and happiness found in the most unlikely of places.
The only problem for me lies in the feeling of unfulfillment I felt in the end. After the long, arduous journey navigating a dismal and desperate way of life, one would certainly hope for a ray of light at the end of the tunnel. As we are reminded more than once though in this book, it is not always about the ending as "a happy story doesn't always have a happy ending." In this case it is the journey that is much more important. Nonetheless, happy ending or not, what I really wanted, actually what I needed from this book, was a sense of satisfaction, to feel good about what I had read and to feel as if all of the agony and hardship along the way was worth something. I am not one of those readers that lives or dies by a happy ending, I could be just as satisfied with a happily ever after as with a beautifully heartbreaking conclusion, if executed right. This book left me feeling empty. There was struggle, there was pain, there was despair, and while waiting for the big pay off, that feeling of resolution and peace that comes with the end of a story, particularly a difficult one, we skipped too far ahead. The conclusion never really hashed out what actually happened, how the myriad of very real issues were dealt with, and what led these characters that we had so heavily invested in and let into our hearts, to that final moment. Instead, we were given a hazy overview of how things turned out which, to me, just didn't feel finished. It didn't feel complete. It skimmed the surface and in doing so didn't satiate my need for a culminating crescendo or even the quiet resolution that comes from a gratifying conclusion to a hard fought struggle.
The yo-yo of emotions is extreme in the story, but the feelings are real and the reunion is sweet helping you push through the suffering and yearn for the carefree, the simple pleasures, and if not a happy ending, at least a happy life.
