Twisted (Tangled #2) by Emma Chase: Blog Tour Review

Blurb:

There are two kinds of people in the world. The ones who look first, and the ones who leap. I’ve always been more of a looker. Cautious. A planner. That changed after I met Drew Evans. He was so persistent. So sure of himself – and of me.

But not all love stories end happily ever after. Did you think Drew and I were going to ride off into the sunset? Join the club. Now I have to make a choice, the most important of my life. Drew already made his –in fact, he tried to decide for the both of us. But you know that’s just not my style. So I came back to Greenville. Alone. Well, sort of alone....

What I've come to realize is that old habits die hard and sometimes you have to go back to where you began, before you can move ahead.

TWISTED picks up two years after Tangled’s end, and is told from Kate’s POV.

About the Author:

By day, Emma Chase is a devoted wife and mother of two who resides in a small, rural town in New Jersey. By night she is a keyboard crusader, toiling away the hours to bring her colorful characters and their endless antics to life. She has a long standing love/hate relationship with caffeine.

Emma is an avid reader. Before her children were born she was known to consume whole books in a single day. Writing has also always been a passion and with the 2013 release of her debut romantic comedy, Tangled, the ability to now call herself an author is nothing less than a dream come true.

Review:

Communication. How many narratives would be resolved with no fuss and no drama if the protagonists would simply talk out their issues? If only characters would take a few minutes to straighten out any misunderstandings, there'd be no need for me to have the desire to toss my kindle across the room, scream aloud in frustration, and slap someone across their face, even if he or she is fictional. All of these crossed my mind once or multiple times while reading Twisted by Emma Chase. What I thought would be a laugh-out-loud comedy akin to Tangled and Holy Frigging Matrimony, was actually an intense and emotional journey told largely from the perspective of protagonist Kate Brooks, a.k.a. Drew Evans' other half.

Twisted is one of those books where you know early on that the you-know-what is about to hit the fan. I'm not spoiling anything; Emma Chase is upfront that this narrative won't be all sunshine and rainbows, which admittedly had me worried because even though Drew and Kate have had their share of ups and downs, I've never doubted that they'd have their happily ever after. Twisted presents an alternative viewpoint to the previous books in the series – one in which Kate and Drew are presented with unexpected challenges and the stakes are greater than ever before. Any and all expectations I had about the story were thrown out the window and I was left feeling shell-shocked in the aftermath of the drama stirred up by Emma Chase.

While Tangled was had me laughing pretty much from beginning to end, Twisted had me on the verge of tears on several occasions. The narrative was humorous at times, but in a bitingly sarcastic kind of way that befitted the tone of the story. When I read Tangled, I loved Drew Evans and thought he was hilarious and charming, despite his obvious flaws. He’s the type of character you can’t help but like, but Twisted taught me that even seemingly perfect book boyfriends are capable of screwing up. I was a bit disappointed that Twisted didn’t have the same lighthearted feel as the previous books in the series but what I appreciated about the story is that it made me feel, even if I wasn’t prepared to experience those particular feelings with this particular book.
